The door on your garage is probably the heaviest door on your home, so if the door does not open when you press the button on your opener, it can be a real problem. If you are on the outside of the door you can't override the opener, so you have to park outside and go inside to fix it. But where do you start?

Checking the Transmitter

If your garage door will not open with the remote, go into the garage and check the button that opens the door. If the door opens, you more than likely need to replace the batteries in the transmitter. While the batteries are known to last a long time, they can go dead after using them for a long period of time. The batteries are inside the transmitter and typically accessed from the little door on the back. Replace the batteries with a new set and try the transmitter again. If the door still will not open. You have another problem and you will have to look further.

Checking Your Breakers

If the door is not working from inside the house, the door might not have electricity to it. The first thing to do is check the breaker panel and see if the breaker that feeds the door opener has tripped. The breaker should be marked but if it is not, look at all of them and see if any have tripped. If one has, reset it and try the door again. If the door opener is still not working, there is most likely something wrong with the opener and you may not be able to fix it on your own. It may be time to call a garage door company and get the door inspected.

Calling In The Professionals

If you have decided to call in a professional to look at your garage door, explain the problem to them so they can get an idea what might be wrong with it. The door technician might check the same things you already did but don't take it personally. They have a process to go through that helps them eliminate potential problems along the way. Once the tech has found the problem, he will come to talk to you about it before fixing it if you request him to. In cases where the opener is no longer working, you will need to decide if you want a new one and pick one in a price range that works for you. If you are not sure what you need, talk to the tech and he can help you find the right one for your door.
